BREAKING NEWS: The Strood to be Tolled
01 April 2009

Mersea-island.com has discovered today that contraversial plans have been passed by Colchester Borough Council to build a toll on The Strood, forcing residents who wish to leave/enter the island to pay a £2.50 toll charge.
Speaking outside the offices in Town Hall today, Councillor Larsif Pools justified the action by commenting "This toll will not only ease congestion on Mersea and encourage residents to be more self-sufficient in their community, but enable us to begin building funds for raising The Strood in 2011."
The work, which is scheduled to be carried out in June 2009 will involve a six-week headache while the causeway connecting Mersea to the mainland will be closed from 5am to 11pm every weekday.
CBC have stated that they are acting legally and within the laws set by central government; "We posted a notice in West Mersea village centre on the 1st of April 2008, and received no complaints against our intentions. Therefore we are proceeding immediately."
How do you feel about the Tolls on Mersea? Will they really help us? Post your comments below.

"so why dont everyone stand to geather and do something about it why didnt anyone protest against it.you must know its about the guvament and not you guys that live there. its about what thay can make out of you."
"this is so that the red faces there can offsett the losses on the VAF yet another unwanted unwarrented waste of tax payers monnies and again headstrong morons in council office over riding the common sense of the common people....roll on the revolution"
"A good old-fashioned protest is in order."
"If the Strood is to be closed from 5am to 11pm every weekday, surely the island will be completely cut off.How will people get to and from work? I was on the island on BH monday and there was no notice advising of this work. Even the Dartford Tunnel only costs οΎ£1.00!"
"And while there at it why do thy build an Airport and a Tunnel ......."
"Why not toll ALL roads that need maintenance to meet safety standards then?,the strood is a necessity not a luxury!.Typical council."
"i think this is a rediculas idea for the people living in mersea i work at the airport and i do a shift patern so that means some days i cant get home and on top of all that i have to pay to get to my house think the councel need to youse there brains a bit moor and think of the islanders."

"I don't think this is FUNNY someone has nothing else better TO DO"
"is this real???"
"Anyhow did anyone spot the other "April fool joke" played on us by Colchester Council ? The parking restrictions on the Esplanade start on April 1st...but they didnt unlock the car park until April 2nd !"
"it costs enoguh to get a bus to collage let alone a toll to get a education !!!!"
"I was like What The Fudge?! at first but remembered it was 1st of April lol"
"Well we can fund it from the spaghetti plants that are springing up all over the island - Mersea will be self-sufficient in pasta as well as everything else - we could keep the rest of the world out :o)"
"Congestion on Mersea? haha, that's a joke. Money making scheme me thinks, no real need to toll it or raise it. Biggest waste of time and money I've heard in a long time."
"HA HA! Happy April 1st!"
