LowTide Day

A fun FREE family marine event is being organised by the Colne Estuary Partnership to celebrate LowTide Day.

This is a free annual event of education and celebration, offering people the opportunity to explore and enjoy local coastal sites and aspects of the sea.

This year’s event is being held at Cudmore Grove Country Park, East Mersea, and will run from 11am to 4pm. There will be much to see and do, and not just for children! Attractions will include:

- A range of children’s activities and games
- Shore searches
- A chance to see marine life up close in touch and feel tanks
- Kite making and flying
- Shell mobile making
- A storytelling walk
- Professional face painting
- Sand sculpting
- Bird watching walks
- Boat trips around the estuary
- Displays on the fantastic marine life of the Colne Estuary

The Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners have kindly agreed to run ferry trips throughout the day from Brightlingsea jetty and Point Clear to East Mersea, for just £1.

Please note high tide is at 1pm on the 27 May and it is possible the strood will be covered between 12pm and 2pm. If so, you can either come along before this in the morning when the event starts or after high tide. Alternatively you can catch the Brightlingsea ferry over to the event at any time between 9am and 5pm.

For further information or if you would like to be involved in LowTide Day, please contact the Colne Estuary Officer, Erin Pettifer on 01206 282480 or by email at erin.pettifer@colchester.gov.uk.

The event is sponsored by Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners, Hampstead homes and English Nature.

Mersea Reunion

We are about to put up posters and advertise a Mersea friends & families reunion at the Victory Hotel coast rd West Mersea on: SUNDAY 30th July 06

We hope to have Ron Green present who is one of our well-known local historians and has a huge collection of Mersea memorabilia.

Organised mostly by those born in the 1950’s it will be open to friends of mersea school, or of that era- and families… which should just about cover EVERYONE… So if you have someone in mind that you often wonder where, or how they are, miss their company from school, or have a lost relation that could help with your family tree, or just want to join in the fun… now’s the opportunity to log in to www.mersea-island.com/ and add their name or yours to the Mersea Reunion ’06 thread in the forum.
We will do our best to track them down, spread the word or just let them know that YOU will be there. J Otherwise someone can do just that –on your behalf!

Hope to see you all there!!
Please bring your old school photos or any of Mersea Island –the older the better.

Most welcome too, will be older generations who might remember life on the island pre & during WW2.
This, with YOUR help and attendance will be a truly lovely afternoon.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Mersea Regatta

West Mersea Town Regatta takes place on Mersea Island in Essex, and has been running for over 150 years. A Regatta Programme containing all the Regatta details along with numerous interesting articles of local events past and present, is available from a number of Mersea shops for about six weeks prior to the Regatta.

The Cobmarsh Marathon usually takes place two weeks before the main Regatta and in 2006 will be on Saturday 29th July. The main Cobmarsh event is a pair-oared Rowing Race around Cobmarsh Island, followed by several more light-hearted rowing races. There is a Prizegiving and social event in the evening.

The Sailing Races start Regatta Day events. The first start is at 0900 hrs with about 200 boats taking part, split into 27 different classes with starts at 10 minute intervals. The competing boats range from Smacks, Racing Yachts and Classic Yachts, to Fisherman's Open Boats and Dinghy Classes.

Entry Forms for the sailing events are available in the Regatta Programme and must be handed in to the West Mersea Yacht Club by Sunday 6th August.

The Watersports events get underway in the afternoon, with a variety of Rowing Races, an Outboard Motor Balloon Race, a Swimming Race and the ever popular Assault Boat Race. The final event is 'Walking The Greasy Pole' which is rigged over the side of the Thames Barge Committee Boat.
Entries for the Watersports are free and entering is not required - just be on the start line.

Waterside Attractions include Displays and Stalls on the car park, the Bocking Concert Brass Band, Bert Stock's Fair, RNLI Souvenirs at the Old Lifeboat Station as well as Regatta T-Shirts, Sweat Shirts and Polo Shirts on sale.
The Old Lifeboat Station situated at the bottom of Firs Chase is the Regatta Emergency Contact Point.

There is Free Parking all day in the School Field in Barfield Road.

A Grand Firework Display takes place at dusk. Please give generously to the bucket collection, as this is the only funding for the display.

A friendly 'Coast Road Evening' social event is held in Peter Clarke's Shed with the Poachers. Details of tickets may be found in the Regatta Programme.

All West Mersea Town Regatta Cups for the Cobmarsh, Sailing and Watersports Events should be returned to MarineStore Wyatts by Saturday 15th July 2006.

MERSEA REGATTA PARKING RESTRICTIONS
The Council's car park in Coast Road, West Mersea will be closed between 6pm on Friday 11 August and 11pm on Saturday 12 August 2006.

The artists are always of a high calibre and the audiences, usually about 70 strong are a friendly lot.

Concerts vary from classic, string quartets and the like, to jazz and the evenings are announced usually about a month ahead.

If you would like to participate (or you know somebody who would love it) please contact the Centre on 384656 or leave your e-mail address with them.

NOTICE: Eco-Teams

We are just about to launch our first new project of the year - Ecoteams. Don’t let the name put you off. Its part of a scheme that operates internationally, you don’t have to be an Eco Warrior. In fact it’s mainly aimed at the general public. Put simply, whether we like it or not we all have a major impact on our environment, and we can all do something to make it better.

It doesn’t matter if the environment is not high on your list of priorities. Some changes you make will make your life more enjoyable or healthier and some will even save you money.

Very briefly, Ecoteams are groups of 4 to 6 people who commit themselves to meeting for 1 ½ hours per month for 4 months.

We have trained up a few facilitators who will get the teams up and running.

The good thing about this project is it actually gives you the chance to change your own environment.

To all of you who are not into the environment it may sound a bit boring, but its actually good fun and it feels good to control the world around you, instead of complaining about all the things that should be done.

So, if you want to be part of a team or even to start one with your neighbours, workmates or local groups, give us a call now 01206 367776.

We want as many people as possible to come forward, but it would be great to welcome those of you who think you are not interested in the environment.
